Today is not tomorrow

I suffer from thinking too much. I think, I overthink, I think about everything even though I probably shouldn’t even let it slip my mind and let it worry me. In the worst days my mind is so filled up with thoughts about the future, my to do list and big decissions I have to make, that I get so worried, confused and stressed out and in the worst cases it causes me to feel that everything around me is falling apart. I am aware of my overthinking problem and for that reason I have a couple of pointers I try to remember to prevent stress and too many thoughts at one time.

♥ Prepare yourself – most days when I wake up in the morning I just want to stay in bed because I know that I have a very long day ahead of me. It is said that overthinkers have a harder time in the morning because they start the day off with worrying about all the things they have to do in the day and if they are going to make it all. Yes, I am one of them, so what I try to do is to prepare myself as much as possible the night before. I lay clothes out ready to wear, and if I decided to go to gym, I also have a gym bag packed and ready to go. If I know that I have things planned, packed and prepared, the days are much easier and I don’t go around and worry about if I’ve forgot anything or if I am going to make all of my plans and appointments.

♥ Make decissions – Being in the twenties often comes with a lot of decissions. Decissions about where to live, what to study, what you want to do with your life and other terrifying choices you have to make on your own – because you are a grown up now (oh, how I wish, that somebody would choose and decide for me sometimes). I’ve spend a lot of time thinking about what I want to do, and the hard part is that often I am torn between wanting to do to things at the same time, and obviously, that is not really possible. I’ve learned that you will help yourself a lot more if you just think everything through, then make a decission and hope for the best, and someway it will all work out – one way or the other. It is such a relief to finally have the decission making off your shoulders, to have a plan and not having to stress over the decission that was dragging you down. Get things done.

♥ Single tasking – single tasking is the new black. While multi tasking is a great skill to master, it can also mean that your head and focus are at thousand places at the same time and you are not really able to ever get everything fully done because you never finish something before starting another. At work is especially where I try single tasking. It means that I will finish writing one mail before I check my other e mail inbox, I will finish one to do bullet before the next on and I will only have a few tabs open at the same time. This way I am able to focus, breathe and get the most important stuff done first.

♥ Today is not tomorrow – having a worried mind causes me to always think ahead and never relax and stay in the moment. I always worry about what I have to do tomorrow or next week. It is time to start living in the moment as well as worry in the moment. Today doesn’t have to define tomorrow, and just because today is bad does not mean that tomorrow will be the same way. It is possible that your luck will turn in less than 24 hours and things will change.

♥ Everything floats. Sometimes it is the best to just let go of thoughts and worries and instead start to believe that things happen for a reason and everything will work out. Most of the time it is a waste of energy to overthink, nothing good comes out of it, so count to ten, breathe and relax and believe that it will all work out someway.
